TAPESTRIES
For Fritz Riedl, tapestries were far more than artistically designed textiles: they were independent works of art intended to stand on equal footing with painting, graphic art, and sculpture. His aim was to establish tapestry as an integral part of the visual arts. His focus was not solely on the textile material or the elaborate weaving technique, but above all on the artistic statement, the composition, and the effect within the surrounding space. For him, the tapestry was like a second skin that clothed rooms, gave them warmth, and fundamentally shaped their atmosphere.
The weaver´s mark:
At the suggestion of an art dealer, Fritz Riedl developed a personal weaving mark from his initials F and R, intended to clearly identify his work. For the works he later created in Mexico, he added a V-shaped element to the mark, which, together with the border elements, forms an M for Mexico.
