ABSTRACT WATERCOLORS
Fritz Riedl’s abstract watercolors often served as the starting point for the designs of his tapestries. At the center of many compositions is a clearly defined focal point from which forms and lines unfold upward—a movement that suggests the spiritual and the transcendent. Geometric structures give the compositions stability, support, and inner strength, while transparent layers of color create lightness and depth. These watercolors already reveal the compositional principles that would later shape his tapestries.
